“What is Abuse?” and other Questions We Receive at Shelwin House

Since domestic abuse affects all women differently, Shelwin House is available 24 hours a day to answer your questions.

Domestic abuse doesn’t always have to involve physical force; interpersonal violence can include any pattern of behaviour that is used to gain or maintain power and/or control over an intimate partner or family member.

Interpersonal violence can come in the form of emotional, sexual, psychological, spiritual, or economic abuse, and can include threats, actions, and intimidation.

If you are looking for a way out of an abusive relationship, but are unsure how to go about it, call us — Shelwin House is open to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The services of Shelwin House are provided absolutely free of charge to women and children fleeing abusive relationships.

While you can bring personal items (excluding furniture), we do provide meals and emergency clothing supplies.

Due to the safety and confidentiality of those we serve, our address is not published online or in the phone book. If you are looking for a place to stay, or to attend a support group meeting, please give us a call for address and directional information.

Shelwin House is funded through The Ministry of Justice, Attorney General, donors, and past victims of abuse.

Shelwin House accepts donations of household items (excluding furniture), small appliances, new blankets, pillows, toiletries and clothing*. One of the best ways to give is through cash or cheque since monetary donations give us the flexibility to apply help where it is most needed. Visit our “Donate” page for additional information on how you can help.

*Please note we can only accept the following items in new condition: toiletries, clothing, pillows and blankets.
